Benfica coach Rui Vitoria admitted his side failed to replicate their first half performance in the second frame after falling to a 3-2 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the International Champions Cup in Toronto on Saturday night.

The reigning Portuguese champions failed to hold on to their 2-1 half-time advantage, but the 45-year old was quick to point out it is normal for mistakes to be made this early in preseason.

“It was a match with two distinct halves,” he told reporters after the match.

“In the first half we did reasonably well but then the team was too cautious. Our goal is not to suffer, but it is clear that there can be errors at this time.

“In the second half, with the substitutes and stoppages in play, it’s clear that it affected the outcome of the match.

“PSG took their chances and made the most of our errors. We didn’t have the same quality but it can happen.”

Benfica’s next match will be on July 24 when they take on Fiorentina in Connecticut, USA.
