Inter defender Davide Santon has admitted he only came back to Italy for the Nerazzurri, while harbouring hope of returning to the Azzurri side.

The 24-year-old, who was a youth product of the Milan club, made his return to the club in January after a three year stint with Newcastle United. Santon made a comfortable return to the Serie A, promoting Watford to make a bid for his services, however the offer was turned down with the young Italian keen to stay in Italy.

“In England I had a wonderful experience, I grew both as a player and as a man,” Santon told Inter Channel.

“I formed a family with my daughter and my wife, now we are happy and I’m happy to be back at Inter.

“This is my home. As soon as there was an opportunity to go back, I had no doubts.

“There was interest from other Italian clubs, but I wasn’t convinced to come back to Italy if it wasn’t going to be at Inter.”

The versatile full-back continued by explaining that national selection for the Azzurri is also on his mind after collecting eight senior caps for his country so far.

“The national team? You always think about it. To play for the national team is always a unique experience.

“I have to do well at the club and the rest will take care of itself.”
