Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has confirmed that goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny will join Roma on loan.

The Polish keeper has been demoted to third choice for a position in the starting line-up, falling behind new arrival Petr Cech from Chelsea, and David Ospina. Wenger believes that a move for Szczesny would be beneficial and that he will return to North London a better player.

Wenger told reporters gathered at a press conference, “Szczesny will have a great future here, I hold him in high regard and he has lots of experience.”

The Gunners manager also confirmed that the Poland international would play no part in this weekend’s Emirates Cup friendly competition, clearing the way for a move to the Giallorossi.

Roma have been in the market for a replacement for Morgan De Sanctis and will hope to finalise the move for Szczesny shortly, particularly after seeing interest in Sergio Romero and Salvatore Sirigu come to nothing.
