Former Fiorentina midfielder Alberto Aquilani has signed for Portuguese giants Sporting Clube de Portugal on a free transfer.

The 31-year-old Italian international was a free agent since the Gigliati let him go in June this year and had been linked with moves to either Sampdoria, Olympique Marseille or the MLS.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Aquilani has signed a three-year contract with the Lions and will earn €2 million a season.

Sporting CP posted on their official Twitter account an announcement of the player’s signing to welcome him to the club. It said: “Aquilani is the new ‘Lion’ reinforcement. You will win. Welcome Aquilani.”

Aquilani scored 13 goals in 81 Serie A matches for Fiorentina between 2012 and 2015 but he failed to score in 25 matches last season.
