Fiorentina defender Facundo Roncaglia could be given a contract extension amid persistent rumours of a possible departure.

The 28-year-old Argentine looked destined for a move away from Florence after returning from a year out on loan at Serie A rivals Genoa, however, in a sudden twist of events the defender could now stay at the club.

Firenzeviola.it reports that Roncaglia may be offered a bumper extension worth almost the twice the amount of his current deal in order to convince him to remain at the club.

The former Boca Juniors man is said to be held in extreme regard by new coach Paulo Sousa, who supposedly pulled the plug on the player’s proposed move to Olympique de Marseille in July.

Sousa is now said to have encouraged the Viola management to prepare an offer for Roncaglia in an attempt to secure his services on a long-term basis.

The news will come as a blow to Genoa, who were reportedly interested in bringing the player back to the Stadio Luigi Ferraris.
