Federico Balzaretti has shed light on the reason he decided to retire from football.

The former Palermo and Roma full-back is now working under Walter Sabatini with the Giallorossi after deciding it was time to retire, following a series of recurring groin injuries.

“I had other possibilities to continue playing, but if you’re not fit, you’re not in a position where you can give your best.” he told Tuttomercatoweb.

“It was better to stop rather than continuing.

“Now I am working as a sporting director. I applied for the job at Roma and luckily I got it.”

“In my career I have seen sporting director’s like Stefano Capozucca, Nelso Ricci, Pantaleo Corvino and Walter Sabatini, who I want to learn from and emulate.

“I’m working for Roma. My job is to follow the player who we loan out and to see them develop.

“Most of them have came trough our academy so it is important for us to monitor them.”
