English Premier League giants Liverpool have turned down a loan bid from Roma for defender Mamadou Sakho.

After failing to impress throughout pre-season, the 25-year-old is set to play a back-up role at the Anfield club, with coach Brendan Rodgers said to prefer Dejan Lovren and Martin Skrtel as the centre-back pairing.

The France international’s lack of chances at the Reds have put several clubs on high alert, but the Telegraph have reported that the club have rejected a bid from the Giallorossi, with the club not interested in selling the player.

Sakho is said to be a fan favourite at Liverpool and the 42-year-old coach views him as a good back-up for Lovren, who has so far been inconsistent since his €28 million move.

In addition, the centre-back is not one of the players Liverpool are compelled to sell, and a shortage in depth in the centre-half position means that the club will be less inclined to sell the 25-year-old.

Sakho, whose career at Anfield thus far has been disrupted by injury, made 27 appearances for Liverpool in all competitions last term.
