Mertens-603x300Amid interest from Serie A rivals Inter, Dries Mertens has sought assurances from new Napoli coach Maurizio Sarri regarding where he plans to use the Belgian during the upcoming campaign before committing to the club.

Since the 28-year-old arrived from PSV Eindhoven in June 2013, under Rafael Benitez, he has not always been a regular starter for the Partenopei and apparently is not fond of the role on the left-hand side of attack he often occupies.

According to Sportmediaset, after being flattered by the interest of Nerazzurri coach Roberto Mancini, the Belgium international has asked Sarri to confirm that he will be used in a more central role before he guarantees he will remain in Naples.

However, with Marek Hamsik also challenging Mertens for the position behind striker Gonzalo Higuain, the man who made just 17 starts in 31 Serie A appearances last season.
