Maurizio Sarri is eager to move on from Napoli‘s defeat to Sassuolo with a victory against Sampdoria at the Stadio San Paolo on Sunday.

The Partenopei opened their season with a 2-1 defeat at the Mapei stadium despite taking an early lead through Marek Hamsik, however the club’s new coach insists his side did not lose against the Neroverdi due to their fitness levels, but their mentality.

“We lost against Sassuolo not because of our physical condition, but because of our mentality,” the former Empoli coach told at his pre match press conference ahead of the game against Sampdoria.

“We did not need to slow down when we had possession.

“Physically, of course we are not at our peak, but in the game tomorrow I hope to see some progress as Sampdoria started their season early and are equipped with pacy players.”

Sarri also insisted that Manolo Gabbiadini was very much part of his plans this season.

“Gabbiadini can play with [Gonzalo] Higuain, he has had some problems with his fitness but he is fine now.

“Allan? He wasn’t in top condition and that’s why he did not start against Sassuolo.

“Higuain? He won’t play for the full game.”

The Partenopei coach also said that it was unlikely Napoli would make further signings before the end of the summer transfer window next week.

“If someone good becomes available then perhaps, otherwise we’ll try to give opportunities to players in the primavera.”
