Genoa 1-0  at the Stadio Renzo Barbera on Sunday night during the opening weekend of the new Serie A season.

Abdelhamid El Kaoutari stole the points with a ferocious shot inside the six yard box in the final minutes of the match.

Palermo dominated possession right from the whistle, but the first opening fell to the visitors when Goran Pandev forced a good save from Stefano Sorrentino following a swift counter attack.

The best chance fell close to the half hour, when Luca Rigoni met Robin Quaison’s corner but saw his volleyed effort spank the crossbar and bounce harmlessly over.

The interval came at just the right time for Genoa, with the home team pressing well, but were unable to find a breakthrough.

Palermo started the second half as they ended the first, delivering in countless crosses that were just about dealt with by the Genoa defence, with two corners forced in quick succession as the game opened up.

With both sides going for broke, a number of half chances were occurring every so often. The best of those prior to the final twenty came in the shape of Quaison, but the forward’s effort was easily gathered by Eugenio Lamanna.

As the clocked ticked on it seemed inevitable the match would conclude with no goals but Franco Vazquez attempted to change that, with the Palermo striker striking a viscous shot that cannoned back off the upright.

It all changed in the final minute of time though when a free-kick wasn’t cleared properly by the Rossoblu and El Kaoutari pounced to seal the three points.

It was Palermo’s sixth win in 21 matches against their opponents.
