Palermo celebrated a 2-1 win over Avellino in the third round of the Coppa Italia at the Stadio Renzo Barbera on Saturday evening as the Rosanero kicked of their 2014/15 season with a victory.

All the games goals arrived after the break with Luca Rigoni striking first before Marcello Trotta equalised for the hosts. Robin Quaison sealed the win for a Palermo side which dominated the game.

Avellino had beaten Casertana in the previous round and they started brightly against their Serie A opponents putting the hosts under early pressure.

However, as the game progressed and settled down it was the Sicilians who began to control proceedings and create opportunities with Andrea Belotti and Luca Rigoni looking particularly lively with the later hitting the post midway through the first half.

Despite their domination Palermo really struggled to to break down a stout Avellino defence which continually restricted them to half-chances and efforts from range. Perhaps missing Paulo Dybala’s incision, the Rosanero went into the break on level terms with their hosts.

The second half began as the first finished with Palermo piling on pressure and pinning the Lupi back in their own half. They finally found the breakthrough when a 53rd minute corner resulted in a goalmouth scramble before Luca Rigoni coolly back-heeled it past Pierluigi Frattali to deservedly give the home side the lead.

With the deadlock broken, the goals began flow in quick succession as Marcello Trotta struck a few moments later to draw Avellino level, before Robin Quaison put Palermo back in the lead a after only two minutes.

As the game began to close out Palermo pushed for a third and Achraf Lazaar slammed a long range strike off the cross-bar, but ultimately the two goals were enough to clinch victory for the home side who could have scored far more had they shown a bit more ruthlessness in the final third.
