Roma have broken through the €100 million per season in player wages barrier.

The figure marks the latest leap in salary packets that have steadily grown during American James Pallotta’s tenure as club president, with midfield veteran Daniele De Rossi the highest-paid player in Serie A at €6.5m per season.

According to Gazzetta dello Sport, the American consortium took charge of the Lupi in 2011 with the wage bill totalling €76.5m, which rose to €95m in 2012 before a slight drop in 2013 to €92m.

However, with the pursuit of the Scudetto and Champions League football the Giallorossi paid €98m to their players in 2014, and will reach a heady €106m in 2015, second only to champions Juventus.

That means Roma are likely to overtake AC Milan as the second-biggest spenders on salaries in the league despite the Rossoneri being notoriously generous with their wage packets over the years, with Inter and Napoli making up the top five by spending around €70m per season each.
