Sampdoria won 2-0 against Vojvodina in the second leg of their third qualifying round match in the Europa League on Thursday night but have crashed out of the competition.

Goals from Eder and Luis Muriel gave Walter Zenga’s team the win on the night but it was not enough to overturn the four-goal deficit from the first leg.

The first half was dominated by Il Doria but they didn’t have an easy time breaking down the Vojvodina defence.

Matias Silvestre had the first shot of the game after six minutes when his long-range shot from about 35 metres missed the target. A Vojvodina attack from the right-wing failed to test the Samp rearguard when a cross flashed across the goal.

Eder secured Sampdoria the lead after 15 minutes when he side-footed his shot into the bottom corner. Roberto Soriano nearly doubled the lead after 37 minutes but Vojvodina goalkeeper Srdjan Zakula denied him from point-blank range.

Danilo Sekulic had a chance to level the score on the night but his shot was blocked by the Doria defence.

In the second half, Vojvodina created more as they grew in confidence. Mirko Ivanic headed the ball on target but Viviano saved from point-blank range. Bojan Nastic blasted a shot over the bar and then Novica Maksimovic’s long-range shot was parried by the Sampdoria goalkeeper.

The Blucerchiati made it 2-0 after 70 minutes when Eder flicked the ball in the air with his heel and Muriel volleyed the ball into the bottom corner. Vojvodina striker Ognjen Ozegovic had a chance to reduce the deficit on the night but his weak shot was off target.

Vojvodina progresses through to the Europa League play-offs at the expense of the Genoa-based club.
