Former AC Milan midfielder Massimo Ambrosini spoke of the upcoming Derby della Madonnina against Inter as a big test of personality for both the Rossoneri and new coach Sinisa Mihajlovic.

Despite coming out victorious twice against the Nerazzurri in preseason friendlies, Milan were defeated 2-0 at Fiorentina in their opening day fixture before registering their first win of the new season against Empoli in the second round of play at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza.

“Beyond the result, I think [the Derby] will be important for Mihajlovic’s performance,” Ambrosini said to Sky Sport Italia.

“The coach needs an answer in terms of personality, so there’s nothing better than a derby to get answers. A defeat after a bad performance could create big problems.”

The 38-year-old made further mention of his similar midfield counterpart Giacomo Bonaventura and his contribution to the Diavolo.

“Mihajlovic asks for plenty from Bonaventura,” he added.

“He’s a player who combines quality and quantity. He’ll have to make a link between the defence and attack departments.”
