Genoa at the Stadio Artemio Franchi on Saturday, despite ending the game with ten men.

In a closely contested match, the Viola sealed victory courtesy of a second-half header from Khouma Babacar but had to hang on for the last 30 minutes of the game after Mian Badelj was shown a red card.

The first significant chance of the match fell to the GrifoneĀ in just the sixth minute where Manchester City loanee Olivier Ntcham went close with a shot at the egde of the box.

Just minutes later however Fiorentina had a chance of their own after some good play from Badelj set up Bababcar who could own flash his effort wide of Eugenio Lamanna’s post.

Genoa forward Goran Pandev squandered the best chance of the first-half just a few minutes before the interval when he could only scoop his effort onto the roof of the net despite being one on one against Fiorentina goalkeeper Ciprian Tatarasanu.

Fiorentina should have scored the opener ten minutes into the second-half after scrappy play from a corner saw the ball come to Manuel Pasqual at the edge of the box, but the Italian hit his shot just wide of the post.

However, the Viola did not have to wait long as just two minutes later Borja Valero’s delightful ball into the box was headed in by Khouma Babacar.

Paulo Sousa’s side soon found themselves reduced to ten men though after Badelj was sent-off after receiving a second yellow card for tripping Genoa’s Tomas Rincon.

DespiteĀ their advantage, Genoa struggled to break the hosts down and could only create scrappy half chances.

The victory takes Fiorentina up to seventh place in Serie A and puts pressure on their rivals for a Champions League, whilst Genoa’s failure to capitalise on their numerical advantage leaves them tenth in the table.
