Paulo SousaFiorentina coach Paulo Sousa is convinced his side will improve following a disappointing 2-1 loss to Basel in Group I of the Europa League.

La Viola squandered a 1-0 lead that came after just four minutes thanks to Nikola Kalinic, before goals from Bikir Bjarnason and Mohamed Elneny sealed the game for the Swiss side after Gonzalo Rodriguez had seen red for the Italians.

“Personally, I think we can be much better than what was on show today,” stated Sousa to Sky Sport Italia.

“We can do better, and that includes when we end up a man down.

“We attempted to change our approach prior to the sending off with two up top, but it wasn’t to be.

“The team need to do better in terms of possession as well.

“If we improve our build-up, especially in terms of the speed, we’ll create many more opportunities.”

Sousa failed to gain a result against his former club, as he attempts to get to grips with his new squad.

“I am adamant we’ll get better due to having players of real ability.”

“In training, we are working on a number of new tactics and how to build up play, which is something we definitely need to starting getting better at.

“These new tactics mean we have the ability to change our setup in the blink of any eye.

“What we need to do is apply ourselves in a game as we do in training.

“We can progress, there’s no doubt about it, but we must replicate what we do in practice on the field when it matters.”
