Jose Holebas has spoken out about the treatment he received from Roma before his move to English Premier League side Watford this summer.

The 31-year-old full-back moved to the English side in early July for a fee reportedly totalling €2.5 million.

TuttoUdinese interviewed Holebas over two months after the transfer was complete and the player’s resentment remained evident.

“On July 2, Rome sold me without consulting me,” Holebas said.

“An incredible story.

“They wanted to sell me and I finally said ‘ok’.

“Rather than ending up on the bench, I had to seize the opportunity and accept the move to Watford.”

The Greek international featured for Roma on 24 occasions last term, scoring one goal and setting up another, after his arrival in August 2014 from Olympiacos.

Holebas described the initial dissatisfaction with leaving Roma that preceded his eventual acceptance of his chance at Watford.

“I was sceptical: everything was new for me, I did not know what to do.

“I could have played in the Champions League with Roma and instead I was at Watford with a very different perspective.

“I had to deal with it reasonably, adapt mentally to the idea.

“Now I am happy, I am comfortable with my teammates.

“It was hard, I was not ready for this, but now I’m happy to be here, playing in the Premier League.”
