Napoli full-back Faouzi Ghoulam believes it was important that the Partenopei kept a clean sheet in their impressive 5-0 Europa League win over Club Brugge.
The Neapolitans have yet to win a single game in Serie A this season having been blighted with defensive issues which has seen them concede six goals in three matches.
“Today was an important game and we knew not conceding a goal was important for us to trust the defence and the team.” said Ghoulam after the match.
“Now we want to do well in the league, but it is only the beginning of the season and we need to work hard.
“The season is long and we want to do well.”
He continued: “We have a very strong team and we can score against anyone, as we have shown today, but we need to improve at the back.”
The Algerian also insisted that he and his teammates are capable of improving under new coach Maurizio Sarri and has also stated they will do everything to try to obtain a victory against Lazio this Sunday.
“Sarri makes us work very hard. It takes time to learn from his tactics but we are improving and we will continue to do so,” said Ghoulam.
“I’ve been with Napoli for two years now and I understand the mentality of the fans. I know that they always want to win but it is difficult.
“We will give everything starting with the game against Lazio and hopefully we can start to recover points in the league standings.”
