Lazio defender Santiago Gentiletti has insisted the Europa League is an important competition for the club ahead of Thursday’s opening Group G fixture against Dnipro.

The Ukrainian club were beaten finalists in last season’s tournament, falling to a 3-2 defeat in the final against La Liga club Sevilla in Warsaw.

“I’m fine physically and to play in this competition is important for us and for all the fans,” the 30-year-old told reporters during the Biancocelesti’s pre-match press conference.

Lazio were beaten 3-0 by Bayer Leverkusen at the Bay Arena to put an end to their Champions League hopes at the first hurdle, missing out on the lucrative group stages of the competition.

“The Champions League is over, we have to think of this competition and deal with it as if it were the Champions League. We must have the right attitude.”
