Marco Materazzi InterFormer Inter defender Marco Materazzi is convinced that his old side can finish in the top two and challenge for the title.

The 42-year-old also believes that Roberto Mancini is the best coach the Nerazzurri have had since Jose Mourinho.

“The Inter I have seen so far have been solid, they’ve conceded very little in these first few games,” said Materazzi to Radio Rai.

“Mancini is the coach with the most credibility there since Mourinho, he has been the right person to lure top players back to the club.

“He convinces clubs and players to allow him to build the team that he wants.

“The club worked closely with the coach over the summer to get the players he wanted.

“It was certainly Mancini who did the most to improve the squad.”

The retired Italian international also had words of encouragement for the Biscione’s centre-back and club captain Andrea Ranocchia who has only played for 26 minutes so far in Inter’s opening four fixtures.

“He has to give everything in training and act as a captain above all, he has to be ready to claim a starter’s spot but it will be difficult” added Materazzi.

“I know Mancini and he doesn’t like to change his favourite systems unless players become tired and it’s right to do that when things are going well.”

The former Perugia and Everton defender also offered his thoughts about Inter’s chances of winning the Scudetto.

“They can certainly aim to finish in the top two places and qualify for the Champions League without having to enter the transfer market in August while worrying about the playoffs,” Materazzi went on.

“With the right defensive solidity this team can definitely challenge for the title.”
