Giuseppe Sannino ChievoNew Carpi coach Giuseppe Sannino has stated that it will be like winning the Serie A title if they manage to avoid relegation this season.

The 55-year-old tactician took over from former boss Fabrizio Castori with the club currently positioned perilously at the foot of the table, without a single league victory so far this season.

“We will start again with a specific goal and a difficult challenge,” said Sannino to Sky Sport Italia.

“The league table shows that we are last but there is still time to change that.

“It is a tough ask but it is one that I have been through in the past. The fact that people think we are already relegated will give us extra motivation.

“I hope that I will be able to implement my ideas into the squad straight away. Obtaining relegation would be like winning the championship.”

The former Watford and Catania coach has also given special praise to Castori after he was sacked on Monday, noting that he was the inspiration behind Carpi’s promotion last season.

“Castori was the life and soul behind the promotion,” Sannino added.

“It is normal that there is a lot of support for him but I cannot change the decision of the hierarchy.

“I wish Castori the best of luck and he has left me with a great squad. If we achieve salvation then the success will be a bit of his.
