Gheorghe Hagi says his son Ianis Hagi is a better player than he was at the same stage of his career.

The 16-year-old joined Fiorentina during the summer transfer window, but is back on loan at former club Vitorul Constanta under the watchful eye of his father who coaches the side.

“He is very talented,” Hagi told Gazzetta dello Sport.

“As a number 10 he is perfect and better than I was at his age, he will be the captain of Romania.

“Steaua [Bucharest] were also interested, but it was Fiorentina who were willing to pay the €1 million.

“For now he will continue to grow with us, when he arrives in Italy will depend on his maturity.”

After two seasons with Brescia, Hagi senior was denied the opportunity to follow in the footsteps of Diego Maradona and join Napoli, admitting he still resented their decision.

“I am still angry at Brescia,” claimed the 50-year-old.

“I had received an offer from Naples to be the heir to Maradona.

“I would have become the new Diego, but Brescia would not allow it.”
