Italy midfielder Marco Verratti believes that the Azzurri are in control of their Euro 2016 destiny following the 1-0 victory over Bulgaria in Sunday’s qualifier at the Stadio Renzo Barbera in Palermo.
Antonio Conte’s side lead the group by two points thanks to Daniele De Rossi’s goal and Norway’s 2-0 victory over Croatia.
“This match and the one against Malta were two important games “, said Verratti during a post-match interview with Rai Sport.
“Our goal was to win both matches and we achieved that, so qualification now depends only on ourselves.”
The Paris Saint-Germain ‘regista’ also sees room for improvement following another narrow win.
“We were unable to close out the game with more goals despite having many chances, this is something we must work on.”
The former Pescara prospect was then prompted to discuss his preferred midfield partner in the Azzurri starting XI.
“De Rossi or Pirlo? They are two great players so I’m fine with both,” said Verratti.
Italy will travel to Azerbaijan on October 10 knowing that a win could secure qualification for Euro 2016.
