Carpi 3-0 at Atleti Azzurri d’Italia Sunday afternoon in Serie A.

Mauricio Pinilla opened the scoring for Atalanta in the sixth minute, followed by Gomez’s unusual goal just before the interval and Luca Cigarini’s second half penalty.

Carpi came out of the blocks week, with Matteo Fedele and Igor Bubnjic managing two quality shots on Atalanta’s goal in the opening two minutes.

The hosts recovered quickly however and secured the lead by a pacey counter-attack that concluded with Maximiliano Moralez’s cross for Pinilla’s headed goal.

Atalanta dominated possession for the remainder of the half but were rarely given opportunities by Carpi’s well-drilled defence.

Indeed, la Dea scored from only their second shot on goal and in the most unlikely of ways too. Playmaker Alejandro Gomez won and then promptly scored directly from a corner just before half time.

After the interval Alberto Grassi and Gomez in quick succession managed to find space for shots on the edge of Capri’s area though neither were able to convert a goal.

Kevin Lasagna came on for Carpi in hopes of adding to the Biancorossi’s attacking bite, but Atalanta were able to add to their lead less than ten minutes after his introduction.

Pinilla was pulled down in Carpi’s box by defender Igor Bubnjic in the 62nd minute and the resulting penalty was promptly converted by midfielder Luca Cigarini.

The match quieted considerable thereafter, though Carpi tried and failed in their attempts to find a consolatory goal.

Atalanta’s win strengthens their hold in the top half of the Serie A table while Carpi find themselves in the relegation zone, two points and two place from safety.
