italy azerbaijanFIGC President Carlo Tavecchio praised national coach Antonio Conte, and spoke about his hope of extending the coach’s current contract with the Italian national team.

The day after Italy sealed their Euro 2016 qualification with a 3-1 victory over Azerbiajan, Tavecchio congratulated the Italian side on their performance.

“We passed the test, we got through the round unbeaten and could not have asked for more,” he said during a press conference.

Tavecchio once again raised the prospect of extending the contract of the former Juventus star and coach, despite the coach’s desire to focus on the current campaign.

“Our desire is to retain the coach, but that will depend on him.

“Only in football is there the habit of talking about renewing someone’s contract two years out, and it’s wrong.

“We will talk with Conte a month before his contract expires, and if he leaves we will then decide what to do next.”

The FIGC president also dismissed notions of animosity between them.

“It is not true that there are problems between us, we’re actually good friends.

“Either way,” he continued, “personal interests are secondary to what is good for the Federation.

“Our values are unquestionable and our goal is always to win.”
