Former Inter favourite Walter Samuel has announced that he will retire at the end of the season.

The six-time Serie A winner with the Nerazzurri and fellow top-flight side Roma, currently at Swiss giants Basel, will bring the curtain down on a senior career spanning 20 years.

“There comes a time where you have to listen to your body,” said the player to Neue Zurcher Zeitung, shortly after making his statement.

“I still wanted to play, but now I’ve ran into some physical differences,” he admitted.

“I need more time than ever to recover after the game. The rest of the guys are ready the day after, while I need two or three days. I can try and do my best, but it will never be the same as before.”

Samuel spent nine years in Milan with Inter, winning a Champions League title and three Coppa Italia medals in addition to his five Serie A victories at the club.
