Lazio overcame an immediate red card setback to achieve a 3-1 victory over Rosenborg in their Europa League tie at the Stadio Olimpico on Thursday to remain first in Group G.

Alessandro Matri struck first for the Eagles and Felipe Anderson doubled the lead after halftime before Alexander Soderlund drew one back and Antonio Candreva buried his penalty kick rebound with ten minutes left.

The match was certainly not without incident, as immediately into the action the Blucerchiati went from nearly scoring to then receiving a red card inside the opening ten minutes.

Lazio were agonizingly close to scoring from Antonio Candreva’s corner kick in the third minute which Wesley Hoedt headed into the post, then Stefano Mauri struck the rebound right off the upper 90.

Further misfortune ensued when Mauricio failed to latch onto a ball sent for Jogen Skjelvik and needed to chase the Norwegian down on an ensuing breakaway, but the Brazilian made a rash challenge that clearly warranted an immediate sending off.

Stefano Pioli was then forced into a tactical switch that saw Ogenyi Onazi leave the pitch for Santiago Gentiletti to fill the void at the back.

Lazio looked uninhibited at the setback, and defied the odds to strike first and take the lead in the 28th minute. Antonio Candreva surged forward along with Alessandro Matri sandwiched between three defenders and threaded a beautiful pass inside the box for the striker to bury past Andre Hansen.

Just a minute later, Santiago Gentiletti made an awful giveaway that allowed Yann-Erik de Lanlay to lob inside the box to Skjelvik, who made a powerful volley  that Etrit Berisha could only parry off the far post.

Johan Bjordal kept the pressure mounting as he made a cross to the header of Alexander Soderlund which hit the post once again with a header in the 36th minute to make it twice in six minutes for Rosenborg.

Lazio flourished on another counter attacking move in the 54th minute, when Alessandro Matri dribbled up the righthand side of the box to made the perfect cut back pass for Felipe Anderson who placed his finesse shot past Hansen into the bottom corner.

The Norwegian giants did scrape one back with 20 minutes remaining after Jorgen Skjelvik crossed from the left and Alexander Soderland got past his markers to power a header past Berisha.

A much needed insurance goal came through the initial efforts of birthday boy Stefan Radu, as the Romanian won a penalty after being fouled by de Lanlay inside the box.

Despite his spot kick being initially denied by Hansen, Antonio Candreva rounded off the scoring by volleying home the third and decisive goal.

A last minute lapse by Abdoulay Konko saw the visitors win a penalty of their own, but Etrit Berisha made a heroic diving save to deny Soderlund his second and sent the Olimpico into a frenzy.
