Wojciech Szczesny – 5.5 – Save
Made an important save from Mehmedi which would have given the visitors a 3-2 lead at the time and could do little about their two goals.
Lucas Digne – 5.5 – Mixed
Could perhaps be accused of a slow start in the second half when faced with Bellarabi but regained his composure to complete a relatively solid, if unspectacular, performance.
Antonio Rudiger – 5.5 – Unconvincing
The German’s concentration dropped off a bit in the second half and was probably happy that Bayer’s early second-half attacking onslaught didn’t last too long.
Kostas Manolas – 6 – Stopper
Looked a bit shaky at times alongside Rudiger, but did make his fair share of clearances and was the steadier of the two central defenders.
Alessandro Florenzi – 6 – Positive
Put in a strong performance before being substituted because of injury; defensively sound and supported Salah well on the right flank.
Radja Nainggolan – 7 – Machine
A typically energetic performance from the Belgian who bossed the midfield area in the first half and kept going in the second even when the visitors had drawn level.
Daniele De Rossi – 6 – Boss
Used all his experience to control the midfield area and provided the anchor which allowed Nainggolan and Pjanic their freedom of movement.
Miralem Pjanic – 6.5 – Maestro
Held his nerve to score the winner from the penalty spot and was as considered as ever in possession. One negative point was some uncharacteristically poor set piece deliveries.
Gervinho – 6 – Runner
Worked hard in both directions on the left flank and used his pace to good effect even if he didn’t directly create any goalscoring chances. Substituted for Iturbe after 68 minutes.
Edin Dzeko – 7 – Target
Made two crucial contributions in setting up Salah’s opener and scoring the second while providing the focal point for the Giallorossi’s attack.
Mohamed Salah – 6.5 – Electric
Had a relatively quiet second half but did the damage in the first, continually catching out Bayer’s high defensive line on the counter attack with strong forward running.
Maicon (56 minutes) – 5.5 – Short
Made a mistake that almost allowed Mehmedi to score and ultimately only spent 20 minutes on the pitch as he had to come back off after picking up an injury.
Juan Iturbe (68 minutes) – 5.5 – Quiet
Replaced Gervinho on the left flank but didn’t really get involved in the game.
Vasilis Torosidis (76 minutes) – 5.5 – Unspectacular
Replaced Maicon at right-back and kept things simple in the last 14 minutes of the game.
