Palermo 3-0 at the Stadio Atleti Azzurri d’Italia on Sunday afternoon in Serie A, flying into seventh position in Serie A

The hosts were the better side throughout the game, scoring an early goal by captain German Denis and finding the second shortly after with Nicola Cherubin. Giulio Migliaccio was sent off with 15 minutes to play, but Marten De Roon’s goal secured the three points for Atalanta.

Atalanta started strong and went very close to scoring after a Denis header was brilliantly saved by Stefano Sorrentino.

It was only a matter of though, as on 18 minutes the Dea found the lead thanks to Denis, who fired home from close range.

Just seven minutes later Atalanta doubled their lead as Cherubin headed home from an Alejandro Gomez cross to make it the 2-0.

Palermo were startled and lacked a strong reaction, and could have conceded more on the counter with Edoardo Reja’s men wasting some potential chances.

The first ten minutes of the second half were quiet, until Ivajlo Chochev went close to pulling one back for Palermo with a header from close range that went just out.

It gave Palermo the spark to find momentum and attack Atalanta, with Alberto Gilardino going very close to scoring on 63 minutes, his shot being deflected on the line by Cherubin.

Atalanta struggled to get hold of the ball as Palermo gave everything to find a goal, but were they shooting was off the mark.

The game seemed to change when on 76 minutes Atalanta when down to ten men with Migliaccio getting sent off after having been on the pitch only 30 seconds after substituting an injured Jasmin Kurtic.

Palermo couldn’t make the most of it though, as De Roon found his first Serie A goal with a precise shot from out of the box and secured the victory for the home side.

The Rosanero remain just one point over the drop zone, whilst Atalanta continue to climb the table and sit currently in an unexpected seventh place.
