Italy drawn in EURO 2016’s Group of Death

Italy team v norwayItaly were drawn into Group E of EURO 2016 in France alongside the Republic of Ireland, Sweden and Belgium following the draw ceremony in Paris.

Many pundits are suggesting that the group is the toughest in the competition.

Former Juventus striker David Trezeguet, Antonin Panenka, Angelos Charisteas and Oliver Bierhoff were the draw masters for UEFA’s event.

Italy met Ireland at Euro 2012 with the Azzurri winning 2-0 in the final fixture of the group stage to progress to the knockout round before eventually ending the competition as runners-up.

Italy met Belgium who are the world’s top team according to the FIFA rankings in a friendly on 13 November with the Red Devils comfortably winning 3-1 after Antonio Candreva opened the scoring.

The Azzurri last took on Sweden in 2009 with Italy winning 1-0 in a friendly and the two nations also met at both EURO 2004 and EURO 2000.
