Both clubs have not won in the league since week nine of this season, when the Aquile won 3-0 against Torino and the Doriani thrashed Hellas Verona 4-1. The last round ended in home defeats for the two strugglers; Lazio lost 2-0 to Juventus and Sampdoria were outclassed 3-1 by Sassuolo.
Stefano Pioli’s job has been put under pressure in recent weeks and he could be replaced in the near future with either Marcello Lippi, Cesare Prandelli, Francesco Guidolin or Cristian Brocchi.
Vincenzo Montella has struggled since replacing Walter Zenga as Samp coach. The Genoese club have lost all three games under the former Fiorentina coach and they have scored just two goals while conceding eight in the process. Montella has said this lack of form is down to a “lack of confidence” and the players have gone to a training retreat in Catania.
Il Doria have not defeated the Biancocelesti at the Stadio Olimpico in Serie A since January 23 2005; goals from Vitali Kutuzov and Francesco Flachi secured a 2-1 win for Walter Novellino’s side on that day.
Mauricio will be unavailable for Lazio because of a one-match suspension. Also missing from Pioli’s team are Stefan De Vrij and Ricardo Kishna with knee injuries, Senad Lulic with a damaged finger, Stefano Mauri with a slipped disc, and Ogenyi Onazi with an adductor injury.
Sampdoria midfielder Nenad Krsticic is still struggling for full fitness while Andrea Coda is still missing with a knee injury and Joaquin Correa is sidelined with a hamstring injury.
