Sampdoria crashed out of the Coppa Italia after they were defeated 0-2 by AC Milan at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris.

Goals from M’Baye Niang and Carlos Bacca condemned Sampdoria to defeat while Ervin Zukanovic was dismissed for two bookings.

The visitors came the closest in the opening exchanges, even going as far as putting the ball past Emiliano Viviano. However, Carlos Bacca was in an offside position when he thought he’d put the Rossoneri in front. Giacomo Bonventura almost beat Viviano at his near post, but the Sampdoria shot-stopper saved his powerful effort.

M’Baye Niang nearly scored a sensational goal, controlling the header forward by Philippe Mexes and striking on the half-volley, but only just missing his shot to the far post. Luis Muriel responded for the Blucerchiati, having a pop at the Milan goal forcing Christian Abbiati to tip it past his post for a corner.

Carlos Carbonero had a speculative effort from range, but Abbiati was alive to the danger and beat it away. Ervin Zukanovic had a great opportunity in the box, but nobody anticipated his header which would have provided an opening.

In the second half the Rossoneri finally opened the score. A well placed through ball from Bacca found Niang running through, who finished into the bottom corner. Matters went from bad to worse for Sampdoria when Zukanovic was shown a second yellow card for a foul on Juraj Kucka.

Antonio Cassano came on against his former side and quickly tested the gloves of Abbiati, but the veteran keeper was able to gather it comfortably. The 33 year-old came even closer with a strike from outside the box, but the ball bobbled wide with Abbiati scrambling. Bacca made sure of the win with a late second, turning Niklas Moisander and finishing low into the bottom corner.
