Napoli defender Raul Albiol has stated that the players are continuing ex-coach Rafael Benitez’s work at the club.

The Spaniard – who left the Partenopei at the end of last season – was replaced by current boss Maurizio Sarri in the summer, with the latter guiding them to top spot in Serie A with half the season remaining, after their 5-1 thumping of Frosinone on Sunday.

“I’m happy with my first goal of the season [against Frosinone], but I’m even happier with all three points,” Albiol told Mediaset.

“Getting the points was extremely important especially after Fiorentina, Inter, and Roma’s setbacks.

“Winter champion? I want to be champion at the end of the season.”

The World Cup winning defender also spoke about striker Gonzalo Higuain, who is currently leading the goalscoring charts with 18 goals.

“It’s important Higuain continues playing in the way he’s doing now,” he said. “He can make a big difference.

“Benitez? We had really good games with him in charge, and we fought for everything – unfortunately losing in the end.

“We’re continuing his work, but with a different coach in charge. We want to win everything, [Maurizio] Sarri is really important to us.”
