genoa fiorentinaFiorentina coach Paulo Sousa explained the challenges faced by his side as they drew 0-0 away to Genoa on Sunday afternoon.

The Viola struggled to get a grip on the game in the first half as Genoa held possession well and pressed aggressively, not letting the away side settle.

“We play for each other here and pass the ball intelligently but we found it hard today because Genoa pressed us well and didn’t allow us to be the usual Fiorentina,” Sousa told Mediaset Premium.

Genoa dominated the first half but the away side did improve after the break.

“The pitch affected our style, but we dominated in the second half despite the difficulties and we could have won the game.”

Sousa was sent to the stands in the second half for appearing to encroach on the field of play.

“Referees have to make decisions without the benefit of hindsight so it’s difficult for them to get everything right,” Sousa commented.

Fiorentina top scorer Nikola Kalinic came on in the second half for the home side and will have felt aggrieved to start yet again on the bench.

“He’s a player who has played a lot since the start of the season and he needs time to recover and get back to full fitness,” Sousa added.

“Kalinic has excellent attributes, he puts opponents under pressure and creates opportunities.

“However, we have other players who do this as well, who can come in and perform the role.”
