Castan - RomaRoma centre-back Leandro Castan apologised to the club after giving away a penalty in their 1-1 draw at home to Hellas Verona in Luciano Spalletti’s first game back as coach.

The Brazilian was making his fourth start of the 2015-16 season after missing the majority of the 2014-15 campaign after undergoing brain surgery.

“It was a frustrating game, especially for me,” said Castan on his official Twitter profile.

“I fought really hard to get back to playing football and I thought I was doing well but I saw today that I have a long way to go in order to play at the back for this team, perhaps they’ve put too much faith in me.

“I want to thank the club and apologise because I have always tried to do the best possible for the shirt, I’m really sorry!”

Castan received support from team-mate Radja Nainggolan and former team-mates Mehdi Benatia of Bayern Munich and Bournemouth’s Juan Manuel Iturbe who reassured the defender that the result was not his fault and that he will come back stronger than ever.
