Newcastle United are reportedly poised to sign Roma outcast Seydou Doumbia on loan before the transfer deadline closes.

The 28-year-old joined the Giallorossi in January 2015 but failed to settle in the Italian capital and was loaned back to former club CSKA Moscow for the 2015-16 season.

According to Chronicle LiveDoumbia arrived on Tyneside to complete his medical and sign a contract.

The Ivorian is expected to join the Magpies on loan with the option to make the deal permanent.

Newcastle’s main target at striker is West Bromwich Albion’s Saido Berahino but a deal will be hard to finalise before the transfer window closes on account of the Baggies digging their heels in over a move so Doumbia could arrive in his place.

Roma are keen to get rid of the player who has no future at the Stadio Olimpico in order to free up a space in the squad for Genoa’s Diego Perotti although Doumbia isn’t technically registered for the 2015-16 season.

The striker made a total of 13 Serie A appearances for the Giallorossi and scored two goals.
