Torino 1-0 away from home at the Stadio Olimpico.

Massimo Maccarone netted the only goal of the game in the 56th minute and goalkeeper Lukasz Skorupski made several key saves to preserve the clean sheet.

The first chance of the match went to the home side five minutes in when Bruno Peres’ lofted effort finished over the net with Skorupski stranded.

Empoli’s first chance came 23 minutes in when Riccardo Saponara found Maccarone on the edge of the box but the veteran Italian sent his shot just wide.

Empoli came close with a couple of free kicks from Leandro Paredes and Mario Rui, the latter’s clipping the top of the crossbar.

Soon after it was Torino’s turn to threaten from a free kick, Daniele Baselli’s effort going through the wall but straight into the arms of the goalkeeper.

At the stroke of halftime a fierce Piotr Zielinski left-footed effort was palmed away by Padelli.

Empoli took the lead after a fortuitous bounce off Alessandro Gazzi’s shin saw the ball fall to Maccarone who slid the ball under Padelli for his eighth goal of the campaign.

In the 62nd minute Maccarone played the part of playmaker and cut the defence open with a delightful ball to Saponara but Padelli raced off his line to block the shot.

In the 85th minute Martinez was given a sight of goal with a free header from eight yards but could not keep his effort down.

In the dying embers of the match Glik rose to nod a Baselli corner kick agonizingly wide of the near post, sealing the fate of the home side.

Empoli’s victory allows them to leapfrog AC Milan into 7th place with 30 points. Torino meanwhile must settle for 14th this weekend, eight points adrift of the victors.
