Former Roma coach and current Lugano coach Zdenek Zeman has said he hopes that the appointment of Luciano Spalletti is a successful one for the Giallorossi.

Spalletti has returned to club to replace Rudi Garcia who was sacked earlier this week after seeing I Lupi drop into fifth place and fall seven points behind league leaders Napoli.

“I hope appointing Spalletti is the right solution.” said Zeman to Sky Sport Italia.

“When he left the club before it was because he could not do his job properly, and today there are some of the same problems at the club.

“Garcia? In his first year at the club he did well, and in his second season Roma also finished second in the league.

“This season though the team is in trouble. I’m not in Rome so I don’t know all the intricacies of the situation, but sometimes changes are made in the hope things will instantly improve. It’s not always like that though.”

Zeman was also asked about his second spell in charge of the Giallorossi, which also ended in being sacked by the club. The former Pescara coach also shared his opinion on Francesco Totti.

“I was not able to work the way I like to work. The club said it wanted to win, but then they always sold the best players. So of course we were never going to come first in Serie A.

“Totti? He could retire if he wanted, and it remains to be seen whether he still has the desire and ability to be useful to the team.

“He’s carried Roma on his back for years, he was always the most important player. Today he isn’t the most important, but he does offer something different to the other players. ”
