Hellas Verona coach believes his team can stay up this season, after they beat Chievo 3-1 to win the Derby della Scala, despite being reduced to 10 men.

Though the Mastini stay at the foot of the table, the win moves Delneri’s side seven points behind Sampdoria in 17th place.

“This is an important result for our position in the table, we have kept our hopes of avoiding relegation alive.” said Delneri to Sky Sport Italia after the match.

“We have the strength to stay up this season. We must do everything we can, we don’t want to have any regrets at end of the season.

“We must not give up, the team has to keep winning and keep playing well. We have to get as many points as possible and continue to play with the same mentality we showed today.”

Delneri also said captain Luca Toni and his striker partner Giampaolo Pazzini must become leaders if Hellas Verona are to stay up this season.

“They both have to be leaders and be an example to the younger players. They can play together up-front if they continue to sacrifice themselves and help the team.”
