Galatasaray drew 1-1 with Lazio at the Turk Telecom Arena in Istanbul on Thursday night in the Round of 32 of Europa League.

Both goals came in the first half as Sabri Sarioglu opened the scoring for the Aslanlar while Sergej Milinkovic-Savic equalised minutes later for the Aquile.

Stefano Pioli’s side dominated possession in the early minutes of the match but Marco Parolo’s weak strike at Muslera was the clearest chance until Gala took the lead against the run of play. Sabri was free at the far post to tap the ball in after Ryan Donk’s turn and pass after 11 minutes.

Fernando Muslera then denied an Alessandro Matri effort and then Matri protested for a penalty but Denayer got the ball first. Lazio made it 1-1 after 21 minutes when Milinkovic-Savic headed in Lucas Biglia’s free-kick at the far post. Parolo then had a firm shot parried away by Muslera.

Galatasaray tried to create some opportunities after their goal but they hardly tested Federico Marchetti in the Lazio goal.

Lazio dominated possession in the second half but struggled to create clear-cut opportunities. Abdoulay Konko blast agonisingly high from long range and Matri dribbled past a defender but he opted for an unsuccessful pass to Milinkovic-Savic instead of going for goal himself.

The Aslanlar had some possession of their own but they would turn the ball over or Lazio would apply pressure on them. Their best effort was Donk’s long-range shot, which was saved by Marchetti.

Milinkovic-Savic squeezed a shot through the Galatasaray defence but Muslera still saved it. Umut Bulut came on for Gala and he had a powerful header saved by Marchetti.

Lazio will host the second leg next Thursday evening.
