Luca ToniHellas Verona beat Chievo 3-1 at the Stadio Bentegodi to win Saturday’s Derby della Scala in Serie A.

The Scaligeri made the stronger start to the game and took the lead in the 29th minute through Luca Toni, who tucked away the rebound after his penalty was saved.

However, it took until the 57th minute for the Mastini to double their lead through Giampaolo Pazzini. Yet, in the 71st minute Sergio Pellissier converted a penalty after Vangelis Moras was sent-off for bringing down Roberto Inglese in the penalty area. Artur Ionita added a final goal in stoppage time to seal the bragging rights for Verona over their Gialloblu neighbours.

In coincidence with the final scoreline,it was the Mastini who made the stronger start to the match and possibly should have opened the scoring when Luca Marrone’s delightful free-kick was headed over by defender Moras.

Although, it was just 5 minutes later when the relegation candidates took the lead. Toni was brought down in the penalty area by Nicolas Spolli and was rightly awarded a spot kick.

The veteran striker placed the ball on the penalty spot and although his initial effort was saved, he comfortably put away the rebound.

Six minutes into the second-half the Flying donkeys created their first chance. Fabrizio Cacciatore’s low cross to the near post was met by Roberto Inglese, but the Italian fired wide.

However, despite Chievo’s response, Pazzini soon doubled the Mastini’s lead. Mohamed Fares’s low cross was directed goal wards by Pazzini, and his effort was deflected into the net via the unlucky Nicolas Frey.

Yet, the Gialloblu were able to get back into the game. Moras idiotically hauled Inglese to the floor in the bos and the defender was swiftly sent-off. This penalty was subsequently converted by the calm head of Pellissier.

But just five minutes later, Chievo’s hopes of mounting a fightback were dealt a blow as Spolli was sent-off for a second yellow card for cynically fouling Urby Emanuelson.

The Mastini sealed the win in the final minute through an amazing strike by Artur Ionita.

The result keeps Hellas Verona at the foot of the table, whilst Chievo stay in 11th.
