General Views of Italy Sporting VenuesWork is set to begin in the summer on serious maintenance of Napoli’s Stadio San Paolo now the plans have been backed by the local authorities and Italian National Olympic Committee.

Opened in 1959, the Neapolian stadium has already been refurbished twice before, in 2010 and before the 1990 World Cup where a roof was installed in the 60,000-seater arena.

“We have €25 million for renovation and that is a huge accomplishment,” stated Mayor of Naples Luigi de Magistris.

“I spoke with the [Olympic Committee] ten days ago and work will start after the league season ends.

“We will start immediately with the toilets and electrical equipment, and the rest will be open for agreement between the council and club.”

Owned by the Commune of Napoli, it is hoped that by modernising the San Paolo, the Azzurri can stay put in their historic locale as opposed to forking out for a new stadium of their own.

“This is a result, not a hypothesis,” continued De Magistris, “the team is strong but the stadium in a bad condition so that is the priority.

“It would be nice to get some more blue in it, too.”
