Real Madrid put one foot in the quarter-finals of the Champions League with a morale-boosting 2-0 victory over Roma at the Stadio Olimpico.

Cristiano Ronaldo broke the deadlock in 56 minutes with a looping deflection over Wojciech Szczesny before Jese doubled his side's advantage with a wonderful solo effort five minutes from time.

Real Madrid

Keylor Navas — Quiet — 6

Wasn’t put under too much duress but was vigilant to prevent El Shaarawy from sneaking through on goal after the interval.

Dani Carvajal — Average — 5.5

Was often caught the wrong side of El Shaarawy and ought to have conceded a penalty when he dived on rashly on Alessandro Florenzi.

Raphael Varane — Spectacular — 8.5

Spared his side’s blushes by mopping up any danger in-behind the Real rearguard and stifled Perotti all evening. A defensive masterclass.

Sergio Ramos — Wall — 8.5

Confident in the tackle, Ramos allowed very little past him and was assured in possession.

Marcelo — Energetic — 6

Posed questions going forward and was unfortunate not to break the deadlock before the interval, but left a lot to be desired defensively.

Toni Kroos — Dynamic — 7

Kept Real ticking in midfield and dovetailed nicely with Modric and James.

Luka Modric — Direct — 6.5

Not the most mesmeric display from the Croatian but retained possession well and forced the Roma reargued to retreat with his forceful runs.

Isco — Deft — 6.5

Improved as the game evolved and made inroads into the home side’s danger area on several occasions. A thorn throughout with his peerless dribbling and skill.

James Rodriguez — Lively — 6

Not the Colombian’s most inventive showing in Real colours but assumed the creative burden once Isco departed. Clipped a delightful cross into Ronaldo who ought to have scored.

Karim Benzema — Positive — 6

Like James, improved as the tie became more stretched. Could have linked more with Ronaldo but troubled Szczesny on a few occasions in the second-half.

Cristiano Ronaldo — Decisive — 7.5

Proved decisive in the end with a spectacular opener. His influence was confined in the first-half but exploded after the interval.

Matteo Kovacic (62 minutes) — Neat — 6

Did little of note after he replaced Isco but kept possession moving in midfield.

Jese Rodriguez (81 minutes) — Impact — N/A

A wonderful solo goal capped off a lovely cameo for the Spaniard.

Casemiro (87 minutes) — Calming — N/A

Introduced to see the game out and did exactly so.
