Sampdoria v Atalanta – Preview: Blucerchiati looking to halt winless run against La Dea

Sampdoria welcome Atalanta to the Stadio Luigi Ferraris on Sunday afternoon as Vincenzo Montella’s side look to put some daylight between themselves and the relegation zone.

The Blucerchiati are without a victory in their last six outings and have collected only a solitary point since their 3-2 Derby della Lanterna success over neighbours Genoa on January 5.

Samp’s lowest ebb arrived when they visited lowly Carpi last month and departed on the receiving end of a 2-1 scoreline. Such has been their dismal stretch of results that, after yielding a seventh-placed finish last term, the Genoa based outfit find themselves only five points clear of 18th place.

They were unfortunate, however, not to halt their dismal run of form against Torino a fortnight ago after Andrea Belotti equalised in stoppage time for the Granata.

Montella’s side were also impressive in their 2-1 defeat to Roma at the Stadio Olimpico last weekend, where they were inches away from salvaging a point in injury time when Mattia Cassani struck the bar.

Atalanta, meanwhile, have been dragged into the relegation dog fight after an impressive autumn in Serie A.

Like Samp, Edy Reja’s outfit are without a win since their December triumph over Palermo and are struggling to cope with the departure of Maxi Moralez during the January transfer window.

German Denis also returned to his native Argentina and, despite the shrewd additions of Marco Borriello from Carpi and Alessandro Diamanti from Watford, the Bergamo side have been struggling infront of goal.

They gifted bottom-placed Verona their first victory of the season and have netted only three times since their January 10 defeat to fellow strugglers Genoa.

Sampdoria boast a mixed record against Sunday’s opponents and were in a hurry to forget the reverse fixture between these two sides in September, where Niklas Moisander diverted the ball into his own net before Denis sealed all three points in stoppage time in a 2-1 defeat for the Blucerchiati.

Montella will be shorn of Carlos Carbonero for the visit of Atalanta while Jacopo Sala and Lorenzo De Silvestre are also expected to miss out.

Atalanta, in the meantime, will be without Gabriel Paletta for the trip.
