GiaccheriniBologna’s Emanuele Giaccherini has insisted that Italy’s main goal is to win the European Championships this summer, despite a dismal recent performance against Germany on Tuesday.

Following their previous 1-1 draw against Spain, the Azzurri were flat and unresponsive against a dominating Die Mannschaft side, and ultimately succumbed to a disappointing 4-1 defeat.

“We all played below par tonight,” the 30-year old told Rai Sport. “It is an ugly result. We need to analyse the game and identify our mistakes.

“In all honesty, I think we felt overconfident following our match with Spain and obviously that was a huge mistake. Especially since a draw in a friendly doesn’t mean much.”

He continued: “Friendlies are important tests for us, and of course we go out to win, but they can also help us see the level we’ll be facing.”

“I do believe that this result will help us in the long run, as we need to improve ahead of the European Championships.

“We are going to the tournament in France to win, of course we will have to play better than we did tonight, but I’m confident we can improve a lot.”
