Atalanta at the Stadio Olimpico on Sunday evening.

Chances were at a premium throughout but Miroslav Klose netted the decisive goal in the 67th minute after some excellent running from Stefano Mauri before the German sealed all three points in stoppage time.

Lazio dominated possession during the opening exchanges but it was the visitors who constructed the first menacing attack of the game.

Mauricio Pinilla profited from Mauricio’s slackness and freed Marco D’Alessandro down the right, but the forward cannoned his effort off the post.

Alejandro Gomez forced Federico Marchetti into a fingertip stop seconds later as Atalanta cranked up the pressure.

Pinilla threaded a tantalising ball across the face of goal on 36 minutes but Mauricio intervened to prevent Gomez from tapping into an empty net. Gabriel Paletta had to be alert to cut-out Ricardo Kishna’s menacing cut-back five minutes later.

Atalanta coach Edy Reja withdrew Pinilla for Marco Borrielo in the 57th minute as the visitors searched for an opener.

Felipe Anderson spotted the intelligent run of Mauri minutes later but the Brazilian’s pass was overhit and Marco Sportiello collected comfortably.

The Aquile broke the deadlock in the 67th minute when ball falling invitingly to Klose to slot into an empty net after Sportiello had halted Mauri’s advances.

Atalanta could have responded almost immediately when Edison Braafheid’s insipid headed clearance fell straight to Luca Cigarini but the midfielder stabbed his effort inches wide of the post.

D’Alessandro spooned Serge Gakpe’s cut-back over the crossbar as the game entered the final quarter.

Klose ensured of all three points deep into stoppage time after Felipe Anderson broke free on the counter-attack and squared a simple ball across goal.

The result moves Lazio to within three points of Sassuolo in 7th place while Atalanta remain only three points clear of safety.
