Italian midfield legend Andrea Pirlo stated his belief that Major League Soccer can become one of the best leagues in the world, and stated his hope that he can help New York City FC win.
The 36-year old joined the newly created NYCFC at the end of last season after winning four straight Scudetto with Juventus, and contributed two assists in his first 12 appearances, despite the club’s disappointing first year.
“Last season I joined a few months into the league, so for me the real adventure of the MLS begins now with the start of the new season,” the veteran said in a join press conference with teammate David Villa.
“We have started well with a win over Chicago, we have a great team and we have a strong desire to play well.
“Last year was a disappointment, but we have a new coach and a new mentality, and I think we will give the fans a great season.”
Former Arsenal enforcer Patrick Vieira is now in charge of the club, and Pirlo is looking forward to seeing what the rookie coach can bring to the table.
“I had the pleasure of playing against coach Patrick Vieira when he was still playing, but now as our coach he has really changed our team’s pace.
“He really wants to help improve the level of football in the United States, which I hope can do.
“I’m here as a player, not a coach or mentor for young players, I’m here to help the team win.
“Of course if any of the players or even the coach want my advice or opinion, I am always willing to help.
Pirlo then said that he thinks there is still room for improvement within the league, but also stated his belief that the MLS could become one of the most competitive in the near future.
“When I came here I knew the MLS was groing and of course it is still a growing league,” he said.
“There is much still to improve, but there is a large fan base, and that is beautiful, not just for us, but for the entire country and league.
“I am convinced that in the next few years this will become one of the most important leagues in the world.”
NYCFC host Toronto FC on Sunday in New York.
