carpiCarpi beat Empoli 1-0 at the Stadio Alberto Braglia  in Serie A on Monday night.

In a tense first-half, the game exploded into life when Levan Mchedlidze was sent-off for a second yellow card in the 25th minute.

In the second-half the Biancorossi pushed for a winner and found it when Kevin Lasagna volleyed the ball into the net in the 85th minute.

Carpi made a strong start to the match and could have opened the scoring when Jerry Mbakogu headed a free-kick goalwards, but his effort was straight at Alberto Pelagotti, who parried the header wide.

In the 25th minute Empoli were struck a major blow when Mchedlidze was sent-off for a second yellow after he elbowed Marco Crimi in the penalty area. Carpi coach Fabrizio Castori was also sent-off for coming onto the pitch and remonstrating with Mchedlidze.

However, the Azzurri were holding their own and could have taken the lead when Marcel Buchel burst past two defenders with some lovely skill but his shot was straight at Vid Belec.

After the interval, Empoli were dominating and could have opened the scoring when Riccardo Saponara flashed a shot wide from the edge of the box.

Yet, it was Carpi who came closest to breaking the deadlock in the 62nd minute. Lorenzo Pasciuti floated a cross into the penalty area and the unmarked Mbakogu flung his body at the ball but got his header all wrong diverting it wide.

The Biancorossi came close once again when Simone Romagnoli thundered a header against the bar following a corner.

Empoli were still looking dangerous and Manuel Pucciarelli produced a stinging shot which was stopped by a remarkable save from Belec.

In the 85th minute Carpi broke through. Pasciuti flashed a cross into the six-yard-box and onto the foot of Lasagna who volleyed past Pelagotti.

In the 90th minute Lorenzo Lollo was sent-off for a second yellow card after tripping Mario Rui.

The result leaves Carpi in 17th place whilst Empoli stay 12th in the table.
