Roma idol Francesco Totti does not deserve to be limited to mere cameo appearances at the club, says former coach Zdenek Zeman.

Totti came on in the 86th minute against Torino on Wednesday with the Giallorossi losing 2-1, and promptly fired home two goals to turn the tie on its head and hand Roma an advantage in their Champions League qualification pursuit.

Zeman is bewildered by the player’s treatment, saying “it’s normal that Totti does these things,” to Sport Mediaset.

“However,” he added. “It’s not normal for him to come on with just seven minutes left.

“I feel sick for Totti, I think it’s right for him to continue at the club.”

Roma coach Luciano Spalletti has an existing rocky relationship with the veteran that has flared twice already this season, and Zeman suggested that while he doesn’t have much knowledge on the internal affairs it should be a trivial matter.

“I don’t know what the internal relationships are, but I don’t think there are many players out there like Totti and I respect him a lot,” he continued.

“The strong man at Roma is Spalletti. He has carte blanche and makes decisions according to his convictions.”
