Postigo SpeziaCesena‘s ambitions of returning to Serie A after just one season away came to an end on Tuesday evening as they fell to a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Spezia.

Despite finishing two places below the Cavallucci Marini in the Serie B table, the Aquilotti sunk their opposition as Sergio Postigo netted the decisive goal with just five minutes of the 90 left to play.

It was Spezia who started the brighter of the two teams, and Zoran Kvrzic sent an early shot narrowly wide of Alfred Gomis’ goal before a defensive scramble from the hosts saw their woodwork come to the rescue.

The onslaught was momentarily interrupted as Gomis’ opposite number, Leandro Chichizola, had his hands tested by Camillo Ciano. Cesena’s optimism was short lived, however, as Francesco Renzetti suffered the misfortune of putting the ball beyond his own goalkeeper to grant the visitors the lead.

Ciano later got the better of Chichizola as he converted a 65th minute penalty, which restored the hope of the Cavallucci Marini, only for it to build to a crushing end as Postigo popped up with just moments remaining.

Spezia’s progression will see them travel across to Sicily as they prepare to match up against Trapani, who are the highest-placed of the play-off teams, with the Granata finishing in third place.
